“Awesome Aitutaki Electron Club”

A new Electron Club has been formed on the tropical island of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands under the auspices of the Aitutaki Sailing Club.
Called the “Awesome Aitutaki Electron Club” – AAEC - Founding members include Taa Maoate, Ted Tavake, Rupe Hewitt, Norman Luxemberg, James Lockery & Thomas Koteka.

More members are expected to join ranks once sailing activity is underway.

At this time five 2nd hand Electrons, recently upgraded to digital format, are soon to arrive on Aitutaki.
The AAEC’s main sailing site will be at Ootu Beach adjacent to the Aitutaki Sailing Club base. A fine location with plenty of water at all tides, fickle currents, generous winds and an easy accessible beachfront with close-up views for both sailors and spectators..
Further sailing sites around Aitutaki and on her spectacular lagoon have also been identified for racing.

First activity for the members will be the Blessing Ceremony of the Electrons on their arrival to Aitutaki conducted by one of our Paramount Chiefs. This will be followed by a serious brief at the AAEC Inaugural Dinner focussing on the History of the Electron, Her Creator, notable Electron characters, how the integrity of the Class is managed and maintained by the E.O.A Committee, and, the uncanny way the Electron continues to forge lifetime friendships. There will also be a tutorial on the do’s & don’ts of general Social Etiquette for home based activity and in the presence of visiting Electroneers, and at racing events and regattas overseas.

This will continue over the subsequent days with coaching on management, setup and upkeep of the Electron, development of Electron sailing skills and technique under different conditions, learning the sailing rules and those particular to the Electron Class, and, typical sailing regatta formats.

The primary aims of AAEC is to widen the sport of RC Electron Sailing and fellowship through regular weekly activity, increase local membership and number of boats, setting up of a bi-annual Rarotonga Versus Aitutaki challenge series, honing our competitive skills for future participation at NZ based regattas and ultimately hosting a Electron World Championship Regatta here on Aitutaki in the not too distant future.
The Electrons have been to Aitutaki before – in 2005 we had a major Regatta here with many sailors from NZ Clubs attending.......and recently in June 2019 a group from Rarotonga and NZ participated in the 1st “Aitutaki Electron Challenge” which was won by Greg Stenbeck.

The AAEC members would like to thank Greg Stenbeck, Peter Heays, Rita & Lindsay Graves, Tony Park, Jeff Hill and both the Rarotonga and Aitutaki Sailing Clubs for the support and assistance in the foundation of this new Electron Club.
